It is easy to find good neighborhoods in Columbus. We are blessed with one of the safest communities of our size in all of America. Forbes recently rated Columbus as one of the 10 best mid-size cities in the United States for families!

What things go into making one neighborhood more desirable than another? Aside from an intangible feeling about a place, there are a number of qualities that set some neighborhoods apart, such as:

  • Good public schools like those found in Bartholomew and Brown counties. Are the schools nearby? If so, it can save you a bunch on hauling your children to and from after school activities to and from Parkside, Southside, Richards, Columbus North, East, or whatever school you enroll your child.
  • Columbus is blessed with well-maintained homes and clean public areas.
  • Where are you going to work and what is the distance to Cummins Engine, Toyota, or Downtown Columbus?
  • Close proximity to good shopping like Fair Oaks Mall, Edinburgh Outlet Mall, Walmart, Kroger, Marsh, etc.
  • Public facilities like Columbus and Brown County parks, soccer and softball fields, "people-trails" and community centers such as Donner Park, Mill Race Park, Coumbus Commons, Columbus City Ha,ll Bartholomew County Court house.
  • Doing thorough neigborhood research is critical if you truly want your home to fit your needs. You might try calling Columbus City Hall to find out whether or not there are any proposed changes in the works. You may like a home right now, but how would you feel if the road in front of your home were to be widened or some other change were to be made. Major projects are often known years before they are actually done. Ask if there are any changes that are to occur in the area.

Though appreciation can be an impossible thing to predict, it's good to at least try to determine a home''s resale potential. Home values in the Columbus area have been pretty stable. Check the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce and the Columbus Economic Development Board for any information on new industries or companies moving to Bartholomew County in the future that could lead to housing demand later.
